Vroom-Vroom
This is my cousin Kaden. Hes a triplet, and a trouble maker one at that. It was Thanksgiving and I needed to take pictures of kids, or just my family in general, but its thanksgiving and believe it or not the kids actually sat still longer than the adults. I was following Kaden around, cammera in hand, when we decided to walk down my stairs. Thats where we sat down and started to play with the toy cars he so kindly stole out of my room.
I think it is easy to see that he is a child. He is small and has toddler hair. He is playing with toy cars and is small compared to the height of the stairs. I didn't want anything to seem posed so I sat on an outcropping near the glass door so I would have good lighting and just let him play. Hes not looking at the cammera, but is instead focused on the car he is driving across his leg. He is playing and that is what kids do. Playing is their job and he is focused on it. I think my angle and the setting of this photograph make this picture all the more better. The stairs create a nice line as well as some repition. The slight angle also helps give the picture depth because the eye follows the steps all the way up the stairs. I think this image is successfull because it draws your attention. It is an interesting picture and it captures a child doing what children do.
If you wanted to get all philosophical and analyze the picture you could. This of the staircase as a symbol for life. He is at the bottom of the stairs, a child. Since life is viewed as an uphill climb he needs to climb the stairs in order to grow up and be successful. Hes not quite a new born so he is not at the bottom of the staircase but he is a toddler so he is also not very high up either. The way the light is playing in the picture puts the subject in the dark. Again since he is a toddler he dosent know very much about the world or how it works. He is essentially in the dark about life. However there is a small ammount of light on his staircase which is about the height of him. This represents the little that he does know about life and the skills he has obtained, like walking, talking, and his personality.
